When I create something, I am not a planner. I am not thinking about composition... I am just feeling this moment in time and expressing my love for it. I am attracted to contrasts, vivid colors, and landscapes, especially clouds. My use of pastels has been self-taught, but I learned about drawing and oil painting in high school. I was heavily influenced by my iconic art teacher, Josée Waring, who always told us in class, "Draw what you see." I come from a family of artists, with 3 of my siblings having made their living through their trade. As I have been a classical 'cellist for most of my life, creating pastel paintings is relatively new for me. I was inspired by a set of dry pastels from the 1940's that were passed down to me from my father when I was a teenager. A few years ago, after completing one of my first works, I jumped up and down with joy at how much fun I had doing it! I use both soft and oil pastels, and I usually paint on black paper.
